Last week, the Ontario government announced the re-introduction to the Support for Seniors and Caregivers Act, 2025. This legislation, if passed, would amend the existing Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021, and the Retirement Homes Act, 2010, to include the following:
- Require long-term care homes to have dedicated programs for dementia care services.
- Strengthen residents’ rights to ongoing support from family or friends who provide care.
- Expand requirements for long-term care homes to have a focus on the cultural, linguistic, religious and spiritual needs of residents.
- Introduce new offences related to the abuse or neglect of a resident and enhance the ability to investigate and prosecute offences.
